Rare “silver” 2p found in charity tin to be given away to a Change Checker.
This afternoon we completed the purchase of the rare ‘silver’ 2 pence coin for £1,350 and now we want to give it to one lucky Change Checker.
The silver 2 pence coin was dropped into a Royal British Legion collection tin in Wiltshire a few weeks ago and made headline news nationwide.
The Fake ‘Silver’ 2p
Poppy collectors found the silver coloured 2 pence piece and thought they had been given a fake. Although they assumed it was worth nothing, they sent it to The Royal Mint to be checked and it’s a good job they did. The coin was confirmed as an extremely sought-after minting error. Somehow a 10p ‘blank’ found its way into the presses and a 2p was accidentally struck onto it.
Errors like this are extremely rare, but The Royal Mint verified the authenticity of the coin with a letter and so here at Change Checker we knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.
We agreed to buy the coin for £1,350, with all the proceeds going to the Royal British Legion and now we want to give the ‘silver’ 2p to one lucky Change Checker.

P.S Further to my last message I haver over 30 of the silver 2p coins PLUS I have a bag of miss strikes, wrong planchetts and blank planchetts that have surfaced over the past few years in either change or in bulk collections I have bought. Happy to photo all of them if you are interested at Change Checked.
Gary
Dear Change Checker. After reading this I am now very uncertain as to a load of 2pence coins I got in a sealed back last year from the bank. Over half of them were silver coloured amd all I assumed is that they somehow missed the coppering process, I still have all of the coins and a picture of them.
Who should I contact in the mint to see if mine are just steel without the copper process or on the 10p planchett?
I can send you photos if you email me and ask for them.
Gary
Hi Gary, this sounds really interesting. We’d love to see a photo if you could post it on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/ChangeChecker
We suggest contacting the Royal Mint, you can find their contact details on their website or try taking it to your local bank.
Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin
If you are registerd already do you have a chance of winning the Silver 2p
