Released today: The Snowman coin we’ve all been waiting for…
Earlier in the year, we revealed that the incredibly popular Paddington 50p coins were to be followed up by a brand new 50p coin…
The coin has been officially released today and we are delighted to be able to reveal the design…
The coin has been issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate 40 years of Raymond Brigg’s classic story The Snowman, and features the Snowman and the boy flying through the air. It has been designed by a member of the Council of the British Art Medal Society, Natasha Ratcliffe, who also designed a number of coins in the Olympic 50p Series.
Commemorative collector editions are available in Brilliant Uncirculated, Silver with colour PAD printing and Gold but unfortunately due to the seasonal nature of the coin and insufficient demand from banks and cash centres, The Royal Mint have confirmed that the Snowman 50p will not enter circulation.
Keen collectors will know that it is not the first time that the snowman has appeared on a 50p coin. In fact the Christmas character has features on a number of different 50ps from The Isle of Man throughout the years, some of which are now listed on the secondary market for as much at £40.
So are you pleased with the design and was it worth the wait? Let us know in the comments below.
Add the brand new coin to your collection today for just £3.99

Its certainly popular. I spent a frustrating day trying to get a silver proof on RM site and Westminster, all to no avail. For a new collector, even worse to then see them on ebay hours later at double the price. Will the RM produce any more?
Hi Steve, I really appreciate your frustration. Collectors were very quick to snap up the Silver coins and as there was an edition limit of 15,000 unfortunately they have now all sold out. You can still purchase the BU version from us though: https://www.westminstercollection.com/p-224V/2018-UK-The-Snowman-CERTIFIED-BU-50p.aspx
Any ideas about the mintage figure for the standard version?, on the RM site the silver is 15,000 minted and the gold 400, but no mention of the standard coin.
Thanks
Hi Rich, mintage figures for the base metal coin haven’t been announced yet, so we’re not sure at this time.
Great design but what a shame this will not be hitting the streets as genuine circulating coinage. Not surprising about the lack of demand at the cash centres given the large number of different 50p’s released over the last couple of years. This is not good news for change-checkers who want the pleasure of actually hunting down coins and adding to their collection from real change, rather than simply buying a collector version (OK I know the argument about pristine example etc, but would be nice to have the choice).
If it’s not being circulated, why is it featured on the changechecker site … you’re hardly likely to find one in your change eh ?
Hi Steve, it won’t be available to add to your collection on the Swap Centre as it won’t be entering circulation, however you can still purchase the coin from us in Brilliant Uncirculated quality.
It’s says the 2014 coin is £39.95 with a different picture but the 2018 is £3.99. How much is this coin and how many instalments please?
Hiya, we are only selling the new 2018 UK Snowman 50p coin at £3.99 available here – https://www.westminstercollection.com/p-224V/2018-UK-The-Snowman-CERTIFIED-BU-50p.aspx The 2014 Snowman 50p is only available to purchase on the secondary market now. Hope this helps. Thanks, Yasmin
