Winnie the Pooh 50p series – What we know so far…

“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart” said Winnie the Pooh.

Well, it seems this silly old bear is right once more, as Change Checker has just heard that a brand new Winnie the Pooh 50p coin series is set to be released this year, and the news has already taken up all of the room in our hearts!

*** UPDATE ***

It has been confirmed that the BRAND NEW Winnie the Pooh 50p will be released Wednesday 23rd September!

Remember to sign-up for updates using the form at the bottom of this blog to stay up to date.

As of the Royal Proclamation on 24th July 2020, a series of 50p designs, inspired by the classic stories of A.A. Milne, will be issued to celebrate one of the world’s most-loved bears and his friends.

It has been confirmed that there will be three 50p coins issued. The first will feature Winnie the Pooh himself and then later, a Christopher Robin 50p, and a Piglet 50p.

Originally published in 1926, Winnie the Pooh is a story about the adventures of Christopher Robin’s honey-loving teddy bear and his friends Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Kanger, and Rabbit.

Since then, Winnie the Pooh has featured in over 11 films, 11 television programmes, 4 different books, and has become a worldwide collectable item.

Whilst the designs of the upcoming 50p coins are currently top-secret, we can’t wait to see this loveable bear, his loving owner Christopher Robin and adorable friend Piglet, come to life once more, this time on the UK’s most collected coin.

I for one cannot wait as I have find memories of Winnie the Pooh, also my son when form (22now) had his whole room Winnie the Pooh, I have a Tigger tattoo!!! So I will be collecting all coins when released, I have every UK circulated 50p since 97 many bunc nifc coins too so very much awaiting the new ones, however I also have to agree too many coins coming out not being released these days!!! Maybe do the same as the potters, release majority then do 2 nifc so to complete you have to pay the premium for just the last ones!!

      Hi Ray,

We’re so glad to hear that you’re as excited about the Winnie the Pooh 50p series as we are! He really is a favourite across all generations 🙂 Whilst we don’t have any information on whether these coins will be issued into circulation, we’ll keep you updated if you’ve signed up for updates.

    • Trisha on August 16, 2020 at 10:25 am

Will there be more to follow?. It would be a shame if they left it at only 3 coins with so many more well loved charters.

      • Alexandra Siddons on August 17, 2020 at 2:59 pm

        Hi Trisha,

We’ll let Change Checker’s know as soon as we hear any information about this!

        Thanks,
        Alex

  5. Steve Williams on August 3, 2020 at 11:17 pm

It is all very well producing a 50p to commemorate the wonderful character that is Winnie The Pooh but how the heck can some sellers be already advertising the 1st coin on ebay (pre-orders) claiming that 40 (yes FORTY) are available on his/her/it`s site . Sounds to me like they have inside access/info .
People like these are responsible for driving priices extortionately high and it should be stopped .

    • Alexandra Siddons on August 4, 2020 at 8:13 am

      Hi Steve,

It’s a shame people are already resorting to those measures 🙁 it does suggest that this 50p will be particularly popular though. Have you signed up for updates on our blog? I can’t wait to see the designs!

      Alex

    • David on August 12, 2020 at 1:38 pm

watch they mite be fake ones there lots of them going around on ebay site

  6. Mandy Belinda Bucko on August 2, 2020 at 7:10 am

I hope there will be a coloured version in BU like the mint did for the dinosaurs. The silver proofs are too dear and I don’t think they are worth the money, they seem to be at hyped prices when they first come out and then 6 months later they are half price!!!

    • Alexandra Siddons on August 3, 2020 at 11:42 am

      Hi Mandy,

Glad to hear you liked the coloured BU version of the Dinosaur 50p coins! We’ll of course keep you updated as soon as we have any new information about the Winnie the Pooh series! Make sure you sign up for updates 🙂

      Thanks,
      Alex

  7. Paul Batchelor on July 25, 2020 at 3:58 pm

    • Alexandra Siddons on July 27, 2020 at 11:17 am

      Hi Peter,
It has been confirmed that there will be three 50p coins in the set, featuring Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin and Piglet 🙂
      Thanks,
      Alex

  9. Judith nichols on July 24, 2020 at 1:07 pm

Can we pre-order for silver/coloureds as I’ve account it would save trying too get through on phones/iPads as we can be on list for normal coins.

    • Alexandra Siddons on July 24, 2020 at 1:34 pm

      Hi Judith,

You can’t pre-order the coins unfortunately as we don’t have any more information at the minute. However, we do have our 50p subscription service for BU 50ps, which gives you priority access to new issue 50p coins in Brilliant Uncirculated quality. You can find more information about it here: https://www.westminstercollection.com/p-510E/Change-Checker-50p-CERTIFIED-BU-Subscription.aspx

      Thanks,
      Alex

      • Judith nichols on July 24, 2020 at 4:28 pm

Hi Alex,I am on the subscription so I get all coins as the come in,couldn’t same be done for coloureds/silver just a thought, thanks for reply, judy

      • Alexandra Siddons on July 27, 2020 at 11:18 am

        Hi Judith,
That’s a great suggestions. I’ll pass it onto The Westminster Collection to see if this is a possibility.
        Thanks,
        Alex

  10. Les Kent on July 23, 2020 at 1:30 pm

DID YOU NOTICE THE DELIBERATE MISTAKE.
    LES.

  11. Les Kent on July 23, 2020 at 1:28 pm

IT IS TRUE THAT THE POO SET WILL MAKE A NICE ADDITION TO ANY 50P COLLECTION BUT I CAN’T HELP THINKING THIS IS JUST ANOTHER MONEY SPINNER FOR THE MINT AND THE DEALERS, I FIND I AM NO LONGER COLLECTING COINS JUST BUYING THEM NOW AT HYPED UP PRICES,
    LES.

    • Peter on July 25, 2020 at 9:13 am

Totally agree les it’s crazy the amount of 50p that are produced each year not and more then half don’t go into circulation anymore where not even in August and we had over 20 50p if you count all territories
I remembered when I started collecting AGAIN in 2012 all coins produced had to be released in to circulation not the case now

  12. Adrian Charlton on July 23, 2020 at 9:59 am

Hi As a matter of interest I have counted the number of 50p coins since they were issued in 1969 and between then and 2010 (42 years) 55 different ones were minted. In the 10 years since then 92 different 50p have been minted which is a huge increase. I chose 2010 because 2011 was when the Olympic series came out. I haven’t counted one or two special ones such as the 2009 “Blue Peter” athletics, but have counted same year variants such as the 4th & 5th portraits in 2015.

    • Les kent on July 26, 2020 at 10:06 am

      Hi Adrian
I have every 50p minted since 1969 and I collected every different dated to build a complete date run
and that amounts to 167 different 50p coins which includes all the rare ones like Blue Peter and Aquatics, and the coins that only went into proof sets but in doing so I took no notice of the so called standard release coins, so you say there are 147 that’s a difference of 20 coins, make you think ?
      Les.

  13. Simon Waddington on July 23, 2020 at 5:39 am

Are these going to be Isle of Man, or one of the other Islands coins or mainland Britain?

    • Alexandra Siddons on July 23, 2020 at 8:33 am

      Hi Simon,
As this is a Royal Mint issue, they will be mainland UK 🙂
      Thanks,
      Alex

    • Melanie on July 27, 2020 at 7:11 pm

Hi Les I know what you mean. I have collected 50ps for years. Always flicking them over to see if the one received in my change was special. Never see any anymore. Greedy people have taken away the fun to make money. Even the Brexit one 10m minted but not one in sight in your change. Unfortunately while there are people like us who pay the ridiculous price for our collections the greedy people will not go away. Such a shame. Melanie

      • Les kent on July 31, 2020 at 11:37 am

        Hi Melanie
Do you have the comple collection of 50ps ?.
        Les

  16. Dale Allard on July 22, 2020 at 5:14 pm

Yes to many 50p coins that do not go into circulation are released. Money making enterprise, and one which I’m wising up too. I was informed these type of coins will never be as sought after as those in general circulation. Only those who have a special interest in the subject matter will pursue.

    • Alexandra Siddons on July 23, 2020 at 8:43 am

      Hi Dale,

It is a little frustrating that we’ve seen less commemorative coins entering circulation in recent years, unfortunately this is out of Change Checker’s control. We keep our fingers crossed that we’ll see some enter circulation soon.

Brilliant Uncirculated coins tend to be sought-after amongst most collectors because they come free of the scuffs and damages you might find on circulating coins, which generally makes them look a lot nicer when stored in your collection. You are right that people who have an interest in the subject matter of the coin, will be more inclined to purchase, but we think that Winnie the Pooh appeals to lots of different audiences, as he’s loved through generations, which will make this coin perhaps more sought-after than other themes we’ve seen!

Do you have a fond memory of Winnie the Pooh from your childhood? 🙂

      Thanks,
      Alex

    • Alexandra Siddons on July 22, 2020 at 2:57 pm

      Hi James,
At the moment very little information has been shared about the coins, other than the fact the 50p series is coming. We will of course update Change Checkers as soon as information becomes available 🙂
      Thanks,
      Alex

      • Martha on August 14, 2020 at 6:33 pm

Wow I am so excited for these coins, piglet has always been a special childhood memory of mine. I thought they would have waited until the 100th anniversary in 2026 so it was a lovely surprise to read that they are coming this year!!!

      • Alexandra Siddons on August 17, 2020 at 3:00 pm

        Hi Martha,

So glad you’re as excited as we are! We can’t wait to see the designs! Piglet is one of my favourite characters, but I think Tigger takes top spot for me! Hopefully we’ll see him on a 50p in the future!

        Thanks,
        Alex
