Coronation 50ps ENTER CIRCULATION!
On 10th August 2023, 5 million King Charles III Coronation 50ps entered circulation and we want to know where you’ve seen one! Click here to let us know and view our interactive Collector Map >>
Issued to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III, the Coronation 50p is only the second 50p to enter circulation featuring the King on the obverse.
Uncrowned portrait
Unlike the collector version of the Coronation 50p, which features a special crowned portrait of the King on the obverse, the version entering circulation will feature the standard uncrowned portrait by Martin Jennings.
Typically, male monarchs don’t wear crowns on UK coinage, however as a special issue for the Coronation, the collector versions of the Coronation 50p and £5 both feature His Majesty wearing the Tudor Crown.
The circulation version of the Coronation 50p will feature the uncrowned portrait of King Charles – the same one that has appeared on all UK commemorative coins issued since the portrait was announced.
So, the hunt is on to find a Coronation 50p in your change with the uncrowned portrait and keep it next to your crowned collector version.
If you don’t already have the Coronation 50p in your collection, you can get yours in Brilliant Uncirculated quality here >>
The second EVER King Charles III circulating 50p
Back in December 2022, 4.9 million Queen Elizabeth II Memoriam 50ps entered circulation. As it was the first ever circulating coin to bear the King’s portrait, collectors raced to find it in their change.
We asked you to help us hunt down the first King Charles III 50p by entering your postcode into our map as soon as you found it. 113 locations were recorded on our collector map all the way from Inverness to Penzance, but it turned out the place where you’re most likely to find the first King Charles 50p in your change was Newcastle!
Have you found the Coronation 50p in your change?
We asked you to let us know where you found the Coronation 50p in your change so we could work out where you’re most likely to find one.
Submissions are now closed but you can view the collector map here to see where they’ve been popping up.

Hi wasn’t sure if I was able to start a new thread, so thought I would jump on this, I hope that’s ok. I finally today found the queen’s memorial 50p, I’m still looking for the platinum 50p and the new kings one.
I’m trying to work out what all 173 50ps are. I know the 116 coins (circulated and uncirculated) but does anyone know what the other 57 are?? I’m assuming different dates and obverse? But no idea, if anyone can enlighten me that would be amazing as it’s driving me slightly crazy!!! Many thanks
Hi Sam, as of 2022, there are 116 UK 50p coin designs dating back to 1997, however the other 57 are 50ps with different dates and obverses. You can find out about all UK coins by using out ‘Find a coin’ function: http://www.changechecker.org/find-a-coin.aspx
I hope that helps, Kate
Why will the uncrowned version not be made available in a card. All other coins to my knowledge have been, what’s changed.
Hi Steve, as the uncrowned version of the Coronation 50p is for circulation only, it hasn’t been issued in brilliant uncirculated collector quality. So the only way to own it is to find it in your change, a true treasure hunt!
I hope that helps, Kate
I tried the post office in grimsby and I have found one I’m grimsby post office
Will I be able to buy the new uncrowned version, uncirculated and on the blue sealed card from you like the crowned version and all the other 50p coins.
Hi Rob, the uncrowned version of the Coronation 50p is circulation only, so the only way you can get one is to find it in your change. You can, however own the crowned collector version in our Change Checker card here: https://www.westminstercollection.com/p-646M/2023-UK-KCIII-Coronation-CERTIFIED-BU-50p.aspx
Kind regards, Kate
Hello!
Really excited by this news!
Might sound like a stupid question, but does this mean it’s actually possible to get hold of one today? I could go to a bank today but sadly my nearest branch is quite far away. Would I actually have a chance of seeing one or would it be best to just wait to find one in my change when shopping?
Either way, the hunt begins!!!
Not a silly question at all! The coins have been released today, but not every bank/Post Office will stock them just yet. We’ll asking collectors to submit where they find them so we can track where they’ve been released.
Found aug 23
Amazing! Make sure you submit the location you found it to our collector map!
finally, i was expecting this to come out during coronation. will these be sent to post offices or banks, i need a single for album and sealed bag.
i wonder who will find it first, me, christopher collects, bungle, caledonian coins or grosey.
It’s certainly been an anticipated release! Banks and Post Offices are always the best places to start your hunt for the newest coins. Best of luck!
Is Change Checker issuing the new circulating Coronation 50p to subscribers?
This is the circulation version, so you’ll have to hunt it down in your change. Best of luck!

I tried at my local Post Office to see if I could get one.
They said that as they were a franchise, they were unlikely to receive any and that I would have to try the main Post Office some 12 miles away.
