A Red Arrows display like no other – The 2025 Red Arrows 50p!

Speed. Agility. Precision…these are all hallmarks of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team—better known as the Red Arrows. And to mark 60 years since their first display, the Red Arrows are being celebrated on a UK 50p!

A breath taking display

This is the first time the Red Arrows have featured on a UK coin, and the design perfectly represents their inspiring and captivating displays which are loved by so many. On the reverse of the coin, graphic designer Nigel Tudman has created a depiction of three sleek and distinctive BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft and their smoke trails.

60 Years of ‘The Reds’

The Red Arrows, often affectionately nicknamed ‘The Reds’ by fans, represent the very best of the Royal Air Force. Since their debut display in 1965, the team has wowed audiences worldwide with their breath taking displays across 57 countries with nearly 5,000 shows, making them a global symbol of excellence.

Becoming a Red Arrows pilot is no easy feat though, as each member of the team must undergo a series of rigorous tests and fit the eligibility criteria before they’re selected. This includes having done a tour on the frontline and having at least 1,500 hours of fast jet flying under your belt, which can take 10-12 years to acquire!

Not to be forgotten though are The Blues, the Red Arrows’ hardworking and dedicated ground engineering crew. The Blues consist of mechanical technicians, avionics technicians, weapon technicians and the dye team, to name just a few! The dye team are responsible for the iconic coloured vapour trails you see during Red Arrows displays, a crucial part of the viewing experience.

We had the honour of meeting the dye team at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2024, where we got a close up look at a Hawk T1!

Previous aviation coins

Although this is the first time the Red Arrows have featured on a UK coin, it’s not the first time we’ve seen military aircraft on UK coins.

In 2017, to mark the centenary of the First World War, the First World War Aviation £2 was issued as the fourth coin in The Royal Mint’s 5-coin series commemorating the First World War from outbreak to armistice. With a design featuring a pilot and an airman taking photographs of the ground below, this coin paid tribute to The Royal Flying Corp and the role they undertook to protect the skies over Great Britain from the enemy.

The following year, in 2018, The Royal Mint issued a 5-coin £2 series to celebrate the centenary of the RAF. Featuring on the coins in the series was the RAF Badge, the Vulcan, the Sea King Helicopter, the Lightning II and of course, the RAF’s most iconic aircraft – the Spitfire.

Although none of these coins entered circulation, they proved incredibly popular with collectors, and in a poll in 2018, the Sea King £2 was voted as Change Checkers’ favourite design from the series!

I know a lot of people who are now giving up coin collecting, not because of the price of BU coins but the fact that hardly any coins go into circulation. Real collecting is just that, finding coins that you find in your change as in Change Checker. If people like to collect BU coins great and they will buy BU coins if that’s their thing, but why not let people who want to really collect coins rather than buy coins a chance. to do so. If the mint continues down this path, coin collecting may well go the same way as Stamp collecting.
    Cheers
    Gordon

Hi Gordon, we would also love to see more coins entering circulation, however this is decided by the Treasury who determine which denominations need more in circulation. Hopefully we should soon start to see more King Charles III definitive coins enter circulation to gradually replace worn circulating Queen Elizabeth II coins, however this process will be gradual, for now just the Salmon 50p and Bee £1 are out there to find.
      Kind regards, Kate

No doubt the Royal Mint (and Westminster Collection too) will be losing a lot of custom with the exorbitant increases in their prices, although I understand the need for Westminster Collection to pass on the increased cost of sourcing the coins to resell. When I started to collect coins it was possible to find the coins in your change but those days are long gone, the majority of releases do not even make it into circulation these days, so if you want to collect them you have no option other than to pay whatever price The Royal Mint chooses to charge. As the demand dwindles away no doubt The Royal Mint will have to further increase the cost of their coins, presumably a never ending cycle until demand reduces to such small amounts that production of any furhter non-circulation coins is not viable. A sad state of affairs.

    • Kate on March 6, 2025 at 2:25 pm

Hi Clive, we appreciate that no one wants to pay more, but unfortunately, our costs rise alongside The Royal Mint’s retail prices. We are working hard behind the scenes to secure a better deal with The Royal Mint for Change Checkers, but the good news is that you can still own UK Brilliant Uncirculated 50ps for £6.00 less than The Royal Mint’s new issue price of £15.
We would also love to see more coins entering circulation, however this decision does come down to the Treasury.
As soon as we have some more clarity as to what that will look like, we’ll let you know.
      Kind regards, Kate

Hi Kate/Rachel, Have all the Signed ones sold out, ? as i never saw them advertised any where and still cant find them, as you both know how much of an avid Reds Follower i am, Regards, John,

    • Kate on February 13, 2025 at 9:30 am

Hi John, unfortunately we only had 150 signed Red Arrows 50ps available and they sold out so quickly we never had a chance to shout about them! Sorry you missed out this time.
      Kind regards, Kate

Is there a way for subscribers to get free postage. I wish I could save my coins and be delivered in one envelope. Other companies offer this a one off postage but free delivery for a fixed term. This would help out if your increasing cost.

    • Kate on February 7, 2025 at 2:51 pm

Hi Sarah, we don’t currently offer the option of delaying subscription deliveries in order to save multiple postage costs. The amount of new releases are different each month and so we wouldn’t want collectors waiting weeks until the next release to get their new coins delivered.
We’ll definitely pass on your feedback to the team.
      Kind regards, Kate

    • Andrew Bailey on February 7, 2025 at 8:31 pm

      Hi Sarah
What you are best to do is cancel your subscription and just wait for 3 or 4 coins to be released then order them all together and you will only pay one postage charge . Trust me the amount of 50ps they bring out per year now you won’t be waiting for long .
      Kind regards Ridge

  5. Andrew Bailey on February 7, 2025 at 10:05 am

I think the price now for a 50p piece is ridiculous £8.99 & £2.99 postage, you will never get your money back on something with a face value of 50p charging that amount. I think it’s time to stop collecting and feel sorry for the younger collectors who you have now priced out of the market . Nothing but greed no consideration for collectors.
    Ridge.

    • Kate on February 7, 2025 at 2:45 pm

Hi Andrew, we do appreciate that no one wants to pay more, but unfortunately due to rising costs from The Royal Mint, we are increasing the price of our BU 50p coins to £8.99. The good news is that you can own UK Brilliant Uncirculated 50ps for £6.00 less than The Royal Mint’s new issue price of £15.
Sadly, our costs rise alongside The Royal Mint’s retail prices, which means we will ultimately have to incorporate the 2025 rises into our pricing. It’s a decision which has taken a lot of thought, however I’m pleased to let you know that prices won’t change for BU £2 or £5 coins for the first half of 2025, whilst we work hard behind the scenes to secure a better deal with The Royal Mint for Change Checkers. As soon as we have some more clarity as to what that will look like, we’ll let you know.

£8.99 for the red arrows 50p that’s a 50% increase on the last 50p.Could you please tell me why it has increased by that much.

Why are they going up when do you do postage expensive . 2.99 for postage that’s expensive . And keep repeating the same thing. It annoying koin club has also but there coins up as well from 5.95to9.95 whotch is ridiculous for a coin

      Thanks

      Toby

      • Kate on February 10, 2025 at 10:00 am

Hi Toby, we’re really sorry to have to increase our prices, however we do have to change our prices in line with The Royal Mint’s rising costs. You are correct that Koin Club have raised their prices even more, and a Brilliant Uncirculated 50p from The Royal Mint is now £15 plus postage, so buying your Brilliant Uncirculated 50ps from Change Checker is still the cheapest way to secure them.

        I hope that helps, Kate
