UPDATED: Commemorative 50p Coin Mintages
Earlier in the year, we updated our Change Checker Guide to UK Commemorative Coin Mintages which included details of all the coins issued into circulation in 2017.
But The Royal Mint has just updated its mintage figures for 2017-dated 50p coins.
It won’t be a surprise that the 2009 Kew Gardens remains king of the 50p coins, but owners of the 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p will be glad to hear that the coin has managed to keep its sought-after 2nd place position on the chart. However, the final mintage has crept up by 1,500 bringing the total to 1,801,500
Whilst all four Beatrix Potter 50ps already had fairly high mintages when the figures were first revealed, the final mintages have since increased, the obvious change being the 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p which has more than doubled. It has been confirmed that further Benjamin Bunny 50ps went into circulation during 2018, bringing the total mintage to 25,000,000.

Hi, I’ve got a 1918 representation of the people act 50p coin, (obviously from this year?) just wondered if it’s rare or how much it worth? ( imagine it’s just 50p)? thank you
Hi Stephen, this coin has only just started turning up in circulation and we don’t have mintage figures yet, so it is difficult to determine how rare it might be. There is always more demand for a coin when it is first released, so at the moment whilst people are still waiting for it to turn up in their change you might find it is more sought after. Thanks, Rachel
Hi I have a 1971 half new penny ,1971 new 1p penny and a 1971 new 2 pence are they rare ?
Hi Donna,
Your 1971 coins each had mintages of over 1 billion: Half New Penny – 1,394,188,250, New Penny – 1,521,666,250, 2 New Pence – 1,454,856,250, so they are not particularly rare.
Thanks, Rowena
I have the beitrex potter coin with just the writing on it and a few others ie Olympic swimming 2016 are they worth anything
Hi Josephine. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell you what your coins are worth as this depends on so many variables. However, if you have a read of our blog “Could I be minted? – The 6 point guide to valuing your coins”, you should be able to determine a realistic value for your coins – https://www.changechecker.org/2018/08/02/could-i-be-minted-the-6-point-guide-to-valuing-your-coin/
I have jeremery fisher and toad and Benjamin Britton how much are they worth and 2 more me fisher 50ps.

How rare is the 1992 eec 50p A’s never seen it listed in the charts?
Hi Kevin,
The 1992 EC Presidency 50p isn’t included in these figures as it is pre-97 specifications and so is no longer in circulation.
It did have the lowest mintage of any circulation coin though, at 109,000, a lot lower than the Kew Gardens 50p.
Thanks, Rowena
Why haven’t you included the 2017 shield in your list, with a mintage of 1.8 million shouldn’t this be in 2nd place ?
Hi Steve,
Yes, the 2017 Shield 50p has a lower mintage, but at the moment we have only focused on the commemorative 50p coins.
Keep an eye out for more blogs though, as soon we will be comparing these commemorative coin figures to definitive coin mintages.
Thanks, Rowena
What are the figures for i struck this coin please?
Hi Sharon,
At the moment we don’t have information about the ‘I struck this coin’ mintages. You would need to contact The Royal Mint for this information.
Thanks, Rowena
Thanks for the update: I notice that the ordinary shield type 50p has a mintage even lower than the Isaac Newton at 1,800,000, plus the lowest ever mintage for the 2p of 16,600,000 (apart from 1972-74 and 1982-84 when it was only issued in sets).
Hi Jim,
Yes you are right, the 2017 Shield 50p has a lower mintage, but at the moment we have only focused on the commemorative 50p coins.
Keep an eye out for more blogs though, as soon we will be comparing these commemorative coin figures to definitive coin mintages.
