Now’s the time to start your 12 sided £1 coin collection…
It’s been confirmed that 2018 dated £1 coins have now been released into circulation and Change Checkers are eagerly waiting for them to turn up in their change.
As of yet, the number of 2018 £1 coins in circulation is unknown and so we expect collectors to be keeping a close look out for these coins so that they can add them to their one pound collection!
The round pounds were a part of our lives for 33 years but on the 15th October 2017, the coins were withdrawn from circulation forever. Just before their withdrawal, collectors joined the biggest race of its kind ever held – The Great One Pound Coin Race.
In an effort to complete their collections, change checkers were searching old coat pockets, smashing piggy banks and checking down the back of the sofa to see if they could be the lucky owner of some of the rarest coins – including the Scotland Edinburgh City £1, which tops our £1 Scarcity Index.
12 sided £1 collection
Now that the 2018 dated 12 sided £1 coin has entered circulation, we think that it’s the perfect time to start building up your collection of 12 sided £1 coins to be sure that you don’t miss any from your collection.
The Nations of the Crown £1 design was chosen from a public competition, with the winning artwork being created by 15-year-old David Pearce featuring a rose, leek, thistle and shamrock bound by a crown. Although we do expect future commemorative designs on £1 coins, for now the coins issued only feature the definitive ‘nations of the crown’ design.
We know that of the 1.5 billion 12 sided £1 coins struck to replace the old round pound in 2017, roughly half a billion were dated 2016 and collectors will be keen to secure themselves a 2016 dated £1 coin to start their collection, which can now also include 2017 and 2018 dated coins.
What about the errors?
When these coins were first released, there were many stories from people claiming that they had found an error coin worth thousands. In reality, with such a high number of £1 coins being minted in 2017, there were bound to be variations in the design and quality of striking which you can find out about here.
However, the confirmed dual dated £1 error coin would certainly be one to look out for, with one such coin being valued at £3,000!

Not sure about this micro dating on one pound coins I have 21 of the 2016 and 2017 coins and all have micro dates on all twelve sides of the coin. Just checked my 2018 coin that also has 12 dates on each side. Are we looking for dates that do not match on a coin? It’s a funny old world of coins
Hi Anthony. The dual dated coin will have 2016 written on one side and then the micro engraved dates on the other side will say 2017. Let us know if you come across one yourself!
Hi. Your article inspired me to find one of dualdated. Can you advice me how many ‘X’ magnified glass I ‘ll need?.
In my collection got 2016 out of centre with 60% round edge , 2017 the us 2016 but smaller error. Also I found one 2018 with the same error but only tiny (coin is somewhere in safe pocket ).
Its really interesting 2018 one pound coin on e.. with big error which I wish to have in my collection.
Got my first 2018 £1 in change at my local Tesco a couple of weeks ago, along with the first 2017 5p I’ve seen. Still not seen any 1p, 2p or 10p from 2017 yet, let alone 2018 (no 2017 20p or £2 (Britannia) minted according to the Royal Mint website). 2p has a low mintage of 16.6 million, so one to look out for.
I think you guys should create a scarcity index for alternate dates of the same coin designs, many collectors hunt for different dates of the same design and it’s quite a large part of collecting coins, so it only seems right that there should be an index for this for collectors to refer to.
Is this something you’d consider doing?
Hi Rich, that’s a good idea. Unfortunately our swap centre only allows you to add coins by design and denomination, not year, so we don’t have the data required to compile a Scarcity Index based on years. We will certainly look into the mintage figures for coins of different years though.
That’s a good point, at least even a ‘mintage number chart’ for alternate dates of different designs & denominations would be a great thing for us to refer to.

I got mine today, whilst shopping at Tesco’s. I now have all 3 years.

Just found one in my change so will be putting it in my collection.
I found 2 2018 dated coins, a few weeks ago in the Isles of Scilly.
I would like to see the scarcity index for the Royal Shield 50 p coins. Some years have less mintage of those like Peter Rabbit or Benjamin Bunny.

I have found 8 2018 in my change from the local Aldi and Tesco stores also I have had a few Benjamin bunny too.

I have found 3 2018 £1coins so far.
But still not any new 10 pence pieces.
Just read about the 2018 dated one pound coins being released and have found one in my change already.
I have found a few in change given to me-and of course I will be taking one or two out of circulation.
Yes found a 2018 £1 coin a couple of weeks ago, only seen the one so far so will be hanging on to it.
I’ve been wondering when the 2018 coins would be released ,and not having heard anything on changechecker, I was surprised to receive a 2018 around a fortnight ago , saved for me by my local butchers shop …who knew I was hunting for one . So they have been out for a few weeks now. The one I recieved from the shop was quite heavily marked… so I’m awaiting a mint unused one to turn up soon .
