2022 Platinum Jubilee 50p – ENTERING CIRCULATION!
In celebration of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, The Royal Mint issued the UK’s FIRST Royal 50p, as part of their Annual Coin Set.
The stunning design, by Osborne Ross, sees the number 70 take centre stage, with the Royal Cypher and dates of Queen Elizabeth II‘s reign also featuring. The fifth portrait of Her Majesty features on the obverse, by Jody Clark.

The 1977 Diamond Jubilee Crown
The last time a Jubilee coin entered circulation, it was met with HUGE collector interest.
In 1977, Her Majesty celebrated 25 years on the throne – her Silver Jubilee and the first of her reign. The Royal Mint issued this commemorative crown.
The coin’s reverse design is focused upon the Coronation theme and features the Ampulla and anointing spoon from the Royal regalia surrounded by a heraldic floral pattern and the Crown.
The coin’s obverse takes inspiration from the 1953 Coronation Crown, showing a newly designed image of the Queen on horseback.
Unusually, this coin does not feature an edge inscription or date on its reverse, making it the only crown of its kind at the time of issue. It was also one of the last crowns to be issued with a face value of 25 pence (commemorative crowns issued after 1990 have a face value of £5), which makes it continually sought-after among collectors!
Roughly 37 million coins were produced at that time, and thousands were gifted to children across the UK as a memento of the occasion.
We’re so excited that Her Majesty’s 70 years of service on the throne is also being celebrated by the issue of a brand new 50p into circulation!
I’m sure demand for the new issue will be high as collectors rush to secure one for their 50p collection.

Hi Alex
I am sure I read or heard somewhere that this will be the second rarest decimal coin, have you heard anything about this please.
Always great information and thank you.
Les
Hi Les,
If no more coins after struck after the initial 1.3 million which have so far been issued, it will make this coin the second rarest 50p in circulation (only second to the Kew Gardens 50p). However, The Royal Mint have confirmed that if demand from the Treasury is permits, they will produce up to maximum of 5,000,070 for circulation. Still quite low numbers but it certainly gives more collectors the chance of finding it in their change.
Best,
Alex
I can’t wait until I find one of these, it has been a long time since a commemorative 50p entered circulation!!
These will be scarce!
1. The designer “Osborne Ross” is actually a design agency: Deborah Osborne and Andrew Ross jointly designed the reverse hence both of their initials at the foot of the design.
2. The last time a Jubilee commemorative entered circulation was actually the £5 crown issued for the Golden Jubilee in 2002 – the Queen on horseback designed by Ian Rank-Broadley – that was in the days when £5 coins were issued for face value through normal distribution channels to the banks and Post Offices.
I get coins through subscription the 50p coming into circulation February will we get that one
The 50p entering circulation is the version available through the Annual Coin Set. The individual issue that you will receive as part of the 50p Subscription Service is the version with the horseback portrait on the obverse 🙂
Best,
Alex
