The Stephen Hawking 50p – what we know so far…

A Stephen Hawking 50p has just been announced and this new coin for 2019 is set to be out of this world!

The latest Royal Proclamation has revealed that a brand new 50p coin will be issued by The Royal Mint this year, celebrating the life of one of the world’s most acclaimed physicists and ambassadors for science – Stephen Hawking.

The 50p design will feature a stylized depiction of a black hole with the inscription “STEPHEN HAWKING” and the entropy equation.

As a great innovator in his field and one of the most famous British scientists of modern times, it seems a fitting tribute that a new coin should be issued featuring Stephen Hawking.

His breakthrough ideas on the workings of the universe can be seen as a significant contribution to humanity, making the complexities of physics relatable for the everyday person.

Interestingly, Stephen Hawking could become one of only three people in British history to be commemorated on a coin within a year of their death, alongside Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother.

Although all the details have not been released yet and the actual design is still top secret, it seems likely that the Stephen Hawking 50p coin will be hugely popular with the British public.

Your Favourite 50p coin EVER, revealed!

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 50p coin, we’ve been asking Change Checkers to vote for their favourite UK 50p coin EVER!

The top four shortlisted coins have now been whittled down to one final winner, and it comes with great pleasure that I can now announce to you the favourite 50p coin ever, as voted for by Change Checkers.

And the winner is…

1994 D-Day Landings 50p

Known as ‘the longest day’, the 6th June 1944 marks the day that a mighty alliance of British, American and Commonwealth armed forces crossed over from England to Normandy and began an assault on occupying German troops.

The D-Day landings were the largest naval, air and land operation in history, which began the Allied invasion of occupied Europe –  one of the most pivotal moments in the Second World War.

In 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of these D-Day landings, The Royal Mint released a 50p coin designed by sculptor John Mills. The design depicts an armada of ships and planes heading in one direction.

The coin has a mintage of 6,705,520 however it ceased to be legal tender in 1997 after the introduction of the new, smaller 50p coins.

Results

A close second to the D-Day Landings 50p was the 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p – a coin which was voted Change Checker’s favorite coin of 2017 and the most historically significant coin.

Coming in third was the Beatrix Potter 50p and the Olympic Football 50p was in fourth place out of our shortlisted coins.

With over 70 different UK 50p coin designs, choosing a favourite was never going to be easy, but I think you can agree that the rich history and significance of the coin, as well as the epic design of the D-Day Landings 50p makes it a very deserving winner of the title Best UK 50p Ever.

Sir Isaac Newton is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time and a key figure in the scientific revolution. Designed by Aaron West, this 50p coin has been issued to commemorate the achievements of Sir Isaac Newton and remembers the legacy he left.

Olympic Football

The football 50p was possibly the most publicised of all the Olympic 50p designs, as it features the hotly debated offside rule in the form of a simple diagram.

Designer Neil Wolfson, a sports journalist by trade, chose an image which he felt would encapsulate the sport whilst also provoke discussion.

2016 Beatrix Potter

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, the Royal Mint released this 50p to celebrate Beatrix herself.

Designed by Emma Noble, the coin includes elements that celebrate Beatrix as the artist behind some of the best-loved characters in children’s literature along with the nostalgic font used for the inscription.
