King Charles III
Demand for King Charles III Coins reaches across the pond
Since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, there’s been a huge shake up in the numismatic world. Not only have collectors been rushing to secure the very last coins featuring Queen Elizabeth II, but wanting to be the first to own new coins bearing King Charles III’s effigy.
But UK collectors aren’t the only ones wanting to collect new King Charles III coins…
A recent survey carried out by The Royal Mint revealed that coin collectors in the United States are interested in collecting new UK commemorative coins. Coin collectors in the US said their attitude to UK coins is changing as a new British monarch takes to the throne.
The figures
- 21% of US coin collectors said they see the start of King Charles III’s reign as an opportunity to begin collecting UK commemorative coins.
- 44% of US coin collectors already purchase UK commemorative coins.
- 54% of US collectors of UK commemorative coins say they plan to increase their UK commemorative coin spend in 2023.
- 76% of US collectors of UK commemorative coins have a positive view of King Charles III. This rose to 81% among a younger audience.
The Head of International Marketing at The Royal Mint, Josh Nesfield, said: “This new research shows growing appetite among US collectors for UK commemorative coins and how the change in UK monarchy is creating new coin interests for US Coin Collector. For years, The Royal Mint has supported US coin collectors as they build their UK commemorative coin collections. We are delighted that more collectors plan to start building their UK coin collections.”
What does this mean for UK collectors?
This encouraging research highlights a continued appetite for UK coins among US numismatists, with it undeniably increasing in line with the new monarchy. The increasing excitement among US collectors means that demand for new UK coins will be at an all time high, especially during the lead up to King Charles III’s coronation.
Considering this, collectors will want to act fast to make sure they don’t miss out on owning these significant issues. Especially as demand is sure to increase in years to come.

5 Million Coronation 50ps Entering Circulation!
The Coronation countdown has begun, as The Royal Mint reveal an incredible range of new UK coins to celebrate the event.
The star of the show is undeniably the 50p coin – the UK’s FIRST Coronation 50p.
But, what’s really got Change Checkers talking is the exciting news that this coin is set to enter circulation this year!
5 million coins will be released later in 2023 and you can bet that collectors will be on the hunt to track this one down in their change.
Commemorating a once-in-a-lifetime royal event, the likes of which we haven’t seen for 70 years, this coin is set to be one of the most significant issues in our collections.
UK’s FIRST Coronation 50p
The last time the UK celebrated a Coronation The Royal Mint issued a Crown coin.
As you can imagine, 70 years on, the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Crown remains incredibly sought-after and you can bet that the King Charles III Coronation 50p will likewise see increased demand in years to come.
Spot the Difference!
Eagle eyed collectors out there will notice that the Coronation 50p entering circulation is in fact different to the collector version available to purchase on the 24th April…
That’s because a special obverse has been created on the collector edition coins – only seen on this Coronation range!
The collector version of the coin features a crowned portrait of the King.
Wearing the Tudor crown (as shown on His Majesty’s royal cypher), this breaks from the tradition of male monarchs appearing uncrowned on our coinage and sets the coins apart from the standard King Charles coins where he is shown without a crown.
Charles in your Change
These aren’t the first King Charles coins collectors can find in their change.
In fact, almost 5 million 50ps were released into circulation last year bearing the King’s effigy on the obverse.
Change Checkers have been on the hunt to track down this coin and kickstart their King Charles III collection.
Now, with the news of the Coronation 50p set to enter circulation, we can look forward to expanding our collections with this significant new issue.
But, with just 5 million set to be released, only 7% of the UK population will be lucky enough to get their hands on one from their change…

CORONATION 50p FIRST LOOK: King Charles Crowned Portrait Revealed
The FIRST crowned coin portrait of King Charles III has JUST been revealed as a special effigy for the UK’s coronation coin range.
The coins will be available from 9am on 24.04.2023 on Westminster Collection’s website but you’ll need to get ahead of the crowd if you want to add them to your collection…
Below, I explain why these 50p and £5 coins are sure to become some of the most sought-after EVER…
First King Charles Crowned Portrait
In a unique collecting opportunity, the UK Coronation coins feature the very first crowned portrait of His Majesty.
King Charles III’s uncrowned portrait has been used on recent UK coins, stamps, and banknotes – maintaining a tradition for male monarchs which dates back centuries.
So, what does this mean for the unusual inclusion of a crowned portrait on the coronation coin range?
These coins will be truly unique; they could be some of the only coins ever issued to feature His Majesty wearing a crown.
UK Coronation Coin Designs
As well as the obverse design, we’ve got a first look at the reverse design of the Coronation 50p and £5 coins.
50p
The Coronation 50p is truly the first of its kind. Never before has the UK seen a Coronation 50p.
The brand new reverse shows a section of Westminster Abbey, where His Majesty will be crowned on the 6th May 2023.
This is set against the Royal Cypher, featuring the same crown that His Majesty can be seen wearing on the obverse design.
£5
The £5 coin shows a depiction of the St Edward’s Crown accompanied by the sovereign’s sceptre with dove and the sovereign’s sceptre with cross.
It also features the inscription, “THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III 6 MAY 2023”.
50p to enter circulation!
And, the best news is that 5 million 50ps will enter circulation later this year, featuring the original, uncrowned effigy by Martin Jennings.
This follows the five million memorial 50ps that have already entered circulation – the very first 50p to feature King Charles III’s portrait.
