This coin was issued to celebrate the life and achievements of English computer scientist, mathematician, and philosopher, Alan Turing. Turing is famed for his leading role in breaking Nazi cyphers during the Second World War with his creation of the Enigma Machine. He is one of the most influential British figures of the 20th century and in 2022, The Royal Mint issued a brand new 50p coin designed by Matt Dent and Christian Davies. The reverse features a representation of enigma code set behind cogs in a touching nod to Turing’s code-breaking machine, Bombe. Also featuring on the coin is the inscription ‘Alan Turing’ – the perfect tribute to the wartime hero.
