Following on from the Maid Marian £5, Little John was the final legendary outlaw to feature in The Royal Mint’s Myths and Legends £5 series. The series’ first 3 coins pay tribute to characters from Arthurian Legend, but the Little John £5 is the third and final coin to complete the Robin Hood collection. Known as Robin Hood’s chief lieutenant and second-in-command of the Merry Men, English folklore portrays Little John as a faithful companion and master of the quarterstaff. It is believed that John Little was the true name of this heroic folklore character, and his towering height and strength as a warrior earned him the ironic nickname "Little John”. He is depicted on this £5 coin ready for action amongst the trees of Sherwood Forest, gripping his trusty staff in hand.
