Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQ page! Here, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about Change Checker.

General Questions

Q: What is Change Checker?
A: At Change Checker, it’s our mission to get everyone to discover the treasure in each UK coin. With Change Checker you can learn more about rare and interesting coins, swap your coins with other collectors and shop the latest UK coin issues.

Q: Is Change Checker free to use?
A: Yes, the Change Checker Swap Centre is completely free. Create your account here.

Managing Your Collection

Q: How do I track my coin collection?
A: Simply log into your Change Checker account, use the ‘Find a Coin‘ feature to identify your coin, and select ‘Add to My Collection’. You can also mark coins as in your collection using the green and red sliders under each coin.

Q: I have a coin which isn’t listed on the site, why is this?
A: We only list UK decimal coins on the site. Coinage from other British Isles like the Isle of Man, and Overseas Territories like Gibraltar, is not actually legal tender in the UK, but their coins can easily slip into circulation.

Using the Swap Centre

Q: How do I use the Change Checker Swap Centre?
A: On the Swap Centre, list the coin(s) you want to swap, and you’ll be connected with other users who have a coin you’re looking for in return. When a swap has been found for you, you’ll receive an email from Change Checker with information regarding the possible swap, including the username of the other user and the coins they would like to swap with you. Be sure to add [email protected] to your safe sender list to ensure our emails don’t end up in your junk or spam folder.

Q: Why are some coins not able to be added to swaps?
A: Only coins that are confirmed to be in circulation are able to be swapped on the site, this is a precaution against potential fraudulent activity. Additionally, very rare coins like the Kew Gardens 50p and Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games £2 cannot be listed as swaps to protect members.

Q: I’m getting a message saying I’ve reached my swap limit, when will this restriction be lifted?
A: When you first start using the Swap Centre, for security reasons you’ll find that your account is temporarily restricted to a certain number of Swap Requests which you can make or receive. Once you reach a limit, your account is temporarily frozen for up to 10 days. As you begin to use the Swap Centre more frequently, you’ll find this restriction will ease.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but this is one of the safety precautions we put in place to prevent against fraudulent users.

Q: I haven’t received a coin from an agreed swap, what can I do?
A: If you have not received a coin in an agreed swap, please email [email protected] and send us the username of the other member and the emails between you and them. We will then check if they’re on our watchlist and ban them from swapping if necessary.

Q: How do I change my address?
A: If your address have changed, please email [email protected] with your username, email address and updated address and we will change it for you.

Q: I’d like to delete my Change Checker account, how do I do this?
A: If you wish to delete your account, please email [email protected] with your username and we will be able to delete your account for you. Please be aware that if you choose to do this, you will no longer have access to your listed collections on the site. This action is irreversible.

Rare and Error Coins

Q: How much is my coin worth?
A: Unfortunately, we’re unable to tell you what your coins are worth as this depends on so many variables. However, you can read our blog “Could I be minted? – The 6 point guide to valuing your coins”, to help you determine a realistic value for your coins.
You can also check out our eBay Tracker to see how much the top coins and banknotes are currently selling for on the secondary market.

Q: I think I have a mis-strike or error coin, will this have added value?
A: If you have a coin with an interesting variation, it’s important to check if it’s something that could have simply been caused by mass production (a miss-strike which is unlikely to have any added value), or if the variation could have been caused by human error, potentially making it very sought after by collectors and adding value. It’s important to get error coins verified by The Royal Mint (see the next question for details).
Check out our Mis-strikes and Myths blog to find out more about some common issues.

Q: How do I get my error coin verified?
A: The Royal Mint offer a verification service where they examine any coins you send in and send it back with a letter explaining their findings and confirming if a coin is an error coin or not. Find out more about this service.
