The coins with THREE different dates on them…
Have you heard about the coins with THREE different dates?
- It was approved by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022
- It was re-approved by King Charles III in 2023
- It features ‘1922’ as a date on the obverse
And if these circumstances weren’t unusual enough, the coins releases also missed the 100th anniversary they were commemorating.

How do the coins have three dates?
In 1922, Howard Carter uncovered a step in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.
That step ended up being the start of a staircase that led to a tomb – the tomb of Tutankhamun.
To mark the anniversary of the incredible discovery, a brand new set of 50p coins were authorised in 2022 by the Isle of Man.
These 50ps then went to Buckingham Palace for approval.
The Queen approved the coins, but that ended up being one of her last official acts before her sad passing on 8 September 2022.
Her death put all new coins on hold.
Mints around the world halted production to observe the mourning period and await palace instructions.
When this came, the Isle of Man was instructed to re-submit an application to the Palace, this time for the approval of His Majesty King Charles III.
The problem? This was late in 2022. Would the Isle of Man get approval from the King before the year of the anniversary passed?
In short, no.
Palace approval came through in January 2023.
The coins features the same reverse, showing 1922 and 2022 commemorating the centenary anniversary.
But the obverse – now featuring the first British Isles King Charles III portrait – carries the year 2023.
So that’s how the coins came to have three dates on it. But what does this mean for it’s collectability?
The power of strange…
Quirks like this are very few and far between… In fact, i’ve never heard of a coin like these.
The closest example came about due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
When the Olympic Games were postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the pandemic, it led to a design quirk that created a collecting frenzy for a particular 50p.
Issued in the 2020 Annual Coin Set, the Team GB 50p was issued to mark our athletes participation in the upcoming Tokyo Games.
So, when the games were postponed, so was this coin’s individual issue.
Eventually issued in 2021, this 50p become one of just a handful of coins to feature a dual-date – 2020 on the reverse and 2021 on the obverse.
The coin sold out in a flash.
So considering the popularity of the dual-dated Team GB 50p, you can understand why coins with THREE dates, such as the Tutankhamun 50ps, are a must-have.

On the reverse design, floral emblems can be seen surrounded the number 75 and His Majesty’s Royal Cypher.
75th Anniversary of the NHS 50p
Also celebrating its 75th birthday this year is our beloved National Health Service.
Our NHS has kept us safe for ¾ of a century and significantly, has saved millions of lives.
This year, The Royal Mint issues its second NHS 50p, following on from the incredibly popular 1998 coin.
Its reverse design features words synonymous with the NHS, including Dedication, Respect, Empathy, and Knowledge.
Windrush Generation 50p
2023 will mark 75 years since the arrival of the Windrush ship, carrying many people from British Commonwealth countries who had been granted British citizenship from the British Nationality Act.
However, the Windrush generations experiences were different than imagined.
To say thank you, and to celebrate their sacrifices and contributions, The Royal Mint has issued a brand new 50p.
Flying Scotsman £2
2023 marks 100 years since the Flying Scotsman entered service.
This is the world’s most famous steam engine and is easily the most recognized.
It was the first locomotive to run on the newly formed London and North-Eastern Railway line.
To celebrate its centenary, The Royal Mint has issued this brand-new £2 coin – one of the first £2 coins to bear King Charles III’s portrait on the obverse.
J. R. R. Tolkien £2
3rd January is official J. R. R. Tolkien Day – the birthday of the Lord of the Rings author.
His works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, have since gone on to be adapted as some of the highest-grossing films of all time.
To celebrate his birthday, The Royal Mint has issued this brand-new £2 coin.
It features a quote taken from Tolkien’s famed fantasy novel, The Fellowship of the Ring.
We can’t wait to see the individual issue of each of these coins, but of course, we will have to wait several months for each of these to be available.

The first UK Star Wars™ 50p was released in July and featured R2-D2™ and C-3PO™ inside the Millennium Falcon.
A far cry from the lovable droid duo, the second UK Star Wars™ 50p took us over to the dark side, featuring Darth Vader™ and Emperor Palpatine™.
The next 2 coins in the series have also been revealed and we can expect these to be released later this year. We know they’ll feature Luke Skywalker™ & Princess Leia™ and Han Solo™ & Chewbacca™!
King Charles III’s 75th Birthday £5
King Charles III will celebrate his 75th birthday in 2023 – just 6 months after he was crowned King.
To commemorate his birthday, a brand-new £5 coin will be issued.
The reverse will feature a floral arrangement surrounding His Royal Cypher, the number 75 and the inscription, “HIS MAJESTY KING CHARLES III 1948 2023”.
When will we see King Charles III Definitive Coins?
It’s been announced that we can expect to see the first UK coinage featuring King Charles III issued very soon! Perhaps the biggest change to UK coinage in decades, both collectors and the general public are getting excited about our everyday coins changing.
Whilst we’ve already seen commemorative 50p and £2 coins issued featuring King Charles III, this will be the first time he will have featured on a UK 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and £1 coin!
It’s been 15 years since we last saw a new reverse design on UK Definitive Coins and this will be the first time EVER that both reverse and obverse designs will change at the same time.
