Harry Potter 50p Collection
Wands at the ready, Change Checkers! It’s been confirmed in the latest Royal Proclamation, that the UK’s FIRST Harry Potter 50p is set to be issued later this year.
And, the best news is that this will kick-start a magical collection of 50p coins, all celebrating 25 years since the publication of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Whilst exact designs are still locked in the ‘Chamber of Secrets‘, the latest proclamation has revealed that we can expect the following to feature in the collection:
- A depiction of Harry Potter with the inscription, ‘Harry Potter 25 Years of Magic’
- A depiction of the Hogwarts Express and the figure of Harry Potter with the inscription, ‘Hogwarts Express 25 Years of Magic’
- A depiction of Albus Dumbledore and the inscription, ‘Albus Dumbledore 25 Years of Magic’
- A depiction of Hogwarts School and the inscription, ‘Hogwarts 25 Years of Magic’
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books in 1997, and has since gone on to be one of the world’s most popular books of all time.

100th Anniversary of the BBC 50p
The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) was formed on 18 October 1922 by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including Guglielmo Marconi.
Since establishment, the BBC has been shaped by some of the UK’s biggest innovators, from Marconi, to John Logie Baird. Baird used BBC frequencies to broadcast some of his first experimental television broadcasts from studios near Covent Garden in London.
The BBC is highly regarded for its award-winning creative output, trusted and impartial news services and innovative use of technology.
To commemorate the centenary of the BBC, The Royal Mint have confirmed that they will be issuing a brand new 50p in 2022, which has definitely got Change Checker excited!
As of the Royal Proclamation, on 16th December 2021, the design is said to feature a globe with transmitter waves accompanied by the inscription “1922-2022 100 YEARS OF OUR BBC INFORM EDUCATE ENTERTAIN”.
2022 Winnie the Pooh 50ps
In 2020, The Royal Mint confirmed a brand new 9-coin series of 50ps celebrating 95 years of fun-filled adventure, each featuring a different inhabitant of Hundred Acre Wood.
The Winnie the Pooh 50p series continues in 2022, with the final three coins in the series being confirmed in the latest Royal Proclamation.
We can expect the final coins to depict designs of the following characters from A. A. Milne’s classic tale:
- Winnie the Pooh and Friends
- Kanga and Roo
- Eeyore
These are some of the most famous characters from the story and we’re sure collectors will be racing to get their hands on these coins as soon as they’re issued!
The £2 Turns 25
It’s incredible to think that the bi-metallic £2 coin turns 25 in 2022! To celebrate a number of incredible issues are set to be released, including some of our favourites, all unified by the inscription, “CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE £2”.

A Woman Ahead of Her Time
Beatrix Potter truly was a woman ahead of her time. Not only was she an accomplished children’s author and illustrator, she was a passionate and knowledgeable farmer and conservationist – long before it became popular.
Potter was always encouraged to draw, and she spent many hours of her childhood making intricate sketches of animals and plants, revealing an early fascination for the natural world that would continue throughout her life.
However, it’s fair to say her enchanting tales of countryside characters, including Peter Rabbit and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle skyrocketed her to stardom. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published in 1902 and it instantly became a best-seller!
The Series That Inspired a New Generation
It was in 2016 that Peter Rabbit escaped from Mr. McGregor’s garden and made his first debut on United Kingdom coinage.
Issued to celebrate 150 years since the birth of renowned Children’s author, Beatrix Potter, this 50p changed coin collecting forever.
This series of coins continued into 2017, 2018 and 2019. Fifteen Beatrix Potter coins have now been issued since 2016, each featuring one of Potter’s delightful characters, from Flopsy Bunny to Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.
Peter Rabbit is the only character to feature more than once in the Beatrix Potter 50p series, with no less than 5 coins issued to celebrated the nation’s favourite little rabbit.
In 2020, The Royal Mint confirmed that Peter Rabbit’s 50p tale had sadly come to an end with the issue of a brand new coin.
This means there are fifteen Beatrix Potter 50p coins to collect and now we’re delighted to see a brand new £5 coin has been added to the mix.

The Tale of the Peter Rabbit 50ps…
Peter Rabbit is arguably Beatrix Potter’s cheekiest character and he’s been one of the most popular and most-loved characters in children’s literature since his first creation.
He’s featured in books, films and even on the UK’s favourite coin, the 50p!
But where did Peter Rabbit’s tale begin and how did he end up on FIVE UK 50p coins? In this blog, we run through the exciting tale of the Peter Rabbit 50p series…
Bridging Generations
Peter Rabbit first appeared in literature back in 1902, when children’s author Beatrix Potter commercially published what was to become her best-seller, The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
The story is centred around Peter, who is far more adventurous than his siblings: Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail. Going against his mother’s instructions, Peter breaks into Mr. McGregor’s garden after being tempted by some delicious looking vegetables… After a close encounter with McGregor, Peter manages to escape, but sadly loses his shoes and iconic blue jacket.
Since 1902, Peter Rabbit has featured in eight books, over 9 tv/film adaptations. and has been made into numerous commemorative souvenirs – including a series of 50p coins!
He’s become a household a name across generations and is loved by families up and down the country.
United Kingdom Peter Rabbit 50p Coins
In 2016, to celebrate 150 years since the birth of Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter, The Royal Mint issued a series of 50p coins.
2016 Peter Rabbit 50p
The 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p was the first coin to be issued in the series and features a close up portrait of the loveable rabbit with his big whiskers taking centre-stage.
The design, by Emma Noble, uses original illustrations from the books to celebrate Potter’s life and works.
9,700,000 of these coins were issued into circulation and proved very popular amongst collectors!
2017 Peter Rabbit 50p
Next up in the series, is the 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p, which is my personal favourite!
Designed by Emma Noble, the coin features Peter Rabbit in his iconic blue jacket in a pose that was to become the emblem of Beatrix Potter’s work.
This 50p has a circulating mintage of 19,900,000. Do you have this coin in your collection? Comment below!
2018 Peter Rabbit 50p
The 2018 Peter Rabbit 50p coin is the third UK coin to feature the much-loved children’s character.
Designed by Emma Noble, the reverse features Peter Rabbit munching on radishes and has the joint lowest circulating mintage of all the Beatrix Potter 50p coins.
The 2018 Peter Rabbit and 2018 Flopsy Bunny 50ps have a circulating mintage of just 1,400,000, so if you have this 50p in your collection, consider yourself very lucky!
2019 Peter Rabbit 50p
The tale continued in 2019 with this 50p coin, which is the fourth coin to feature the much-loved Children’s character.
Struck by The Royal Mint, the reverse of the coin features an original illustration of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter that has been engraved by Royal Mint coin designer, Emma Noble.
This coin was issued in collector quality only and did not enter general circulation.
2020 Peter Rabbit 50p
Issued during a world pandemic, this Peter Rabbit 50p is arguably the forgotten coin of 2020.
It was confirmed to be the very last UK Peter Rabbit 50p, sadly bringing his UK 50p tale to an end. Masked by the events of the pandemic, the significance of this coin’s issue was missed.
It’s reverse features a design of an original Beatrix Potter illustration of Peter Rabbit, scrambling under Mr. McGregor’s fence.
It did not enter general circulation and was issued only in collector quality.
